Lippiano Castle

The castle of Lippiano is mentioned in some documents of the Bishop’s Council of Citta’ di Castello as early as 1195. In 1250 the castle was owned by the Lambardi family, under Frederick I. The Marquises Di Monte Santa Maria Tiberina occupied it in 1336, taking it over from the Tarlati family, who had dispossessed the Lambardi.
This possession was acknowledged and, so to speak, legalized by an Imperial diploma of Emperor Charles V of Luxembourg, which constituted the feud of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina.
With an agreement dated February 15th 1532, the members of the family of Marquises of Monte Santa Tiberina established that the feud be run by the eldest of the family, who was supposed to live in the castle of Lippiano.
In 1564, the members of the same family appointed a Vicar in Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and another one in Lippiano to administer justice.
In 1815, the feud of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina was suppressed along with many others in Europe.
The Congress of Vienna, with article 100 of a resolution dated June 9th 1815, transferred the former feud to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, who took its possession on August 29th 1815.
The family of the Marquises of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina was stripped of any rights to run the territory but maintained the ownership of the castle and its pertinences.
In 1917 the Prince of San Faustino sold the castle to the Mignini family, who still owns it.
